Education & Prior Work Experience

For two decades, Matt has worked as a guide, group facilitator, and counselor. He earned his master’s in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology from Naropa University, where he focused on Wilderness Therapy and the treatment of psychological trauma through Mindfulness-based counseling, Play Therapy, and other Somatic interventions. In the Fall of 2020, he will begin work on earning his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. He has a decade of experience as a school counselor, where he worked closely with both students and their families to promote positive participation and non-violent communication, and he has extensive experience in conflict resolution.

Strengths

Matt seeks ways to promote his clients’ growth and healing through deep listening and reflection, and he understands that compassion and gentleness are keys to creating and maintaining peaceful and healthy relationships. He views the counseling relationship as a co-journey, trusting in peoples’ innate wisdom, as well as the fact that we can all find ourselves in need of help in times of stress, loss, transition, and recovery. He believes in the power of understanding ourselves as part of a larger whole and encourages the creation of connection in community.

Interests

Matt currently lives in Hawaii, where he pursues his passion for being in the ocean; be it surfing, snorkeling, or diving. He loves to dance and create art, and he is an accomplished writer of haiku poetry. He nurtures friendships that are based on respect and shared laughter, and he will happily spend time with dogs and in gardens, though not necessarily at the same time.
