Entrada: 10 years of being a part of Santa Clara community

Posted by Josh Nelson on August 21, 2014

This October marks the ten-year anniversary for Second Nature Entrada, in Santa Clara, Utah. Not only has Entrada set the standard in providing the highest level of care for our adolescent and young adult participants and their families back home, it has also supported and helped to grow the local community.

During our first decade, Entrada has become a staple in the local community through creating and providing jobs, participating in service projects, and supporting local land agencies and businesses. By contracting with local businesses for goods and services, Entrada has forged strong communal relationships, helping to grow businesses and keeping resources flowing in the southern UtaGet outdoors 02h economy.

One of the main focuses of Entrada’s community outreach is working with local agencies and organizations. Recently we participated in two events sponsored by local organizations. On June 7th the St. George BLM Field Office hosted “Get Outdoors Day,” an event aimed at getting the community to take advantage of all of the public lands available in the area. For the second straight year Entrada sponsored a booth where primitive fire making skills were taught. We encouraged and invited those who stopped by to try their hand at the “bow-drill” fire.

On July 15th, the Southwest Utah Public Health Department (SWUPHD) activated a exercise designed to test Utah hospitals’ and other agencies’ abilities to coordinate pick up and distribution of vital medication in the event of terror attacks or other such emergencies or disasters. Second Nature Entrada enrolled as a participating agency. Entrada Program Director (Rick Heizer), Logistics Director (Josh Nelson), and Medical Coordinator (Adam Garrard) coordinated the pick up, cataloguing, and distribution of this “emergency medication” in the field to all participants and employees (a total of 128 people). This disaster drill helped many local and state organizations improve their disaster management plans and gave all of us the opportunity for invaluable coordination.

Second Nature Entrada embraces the philosophy that our success centers on constantly focusing on and being actively involved in our community and support networks. We look forward to additional as well as continued involvement in the local community as we move into our second decade of operation.

Josh Nelson is the Logistics Coordinator at Second Nature Entrada.
