J Celebrates 20 Years In Wilderness Therapy

Wow! Dr. J Huffine is celebrating his 20-year anniversary as a wilderness therapist!! J started his work in Texas in the late 90s and has been part of the evolution of wilderness therapy, seeing the growth and refinement of one of the most powerful modes of treatment for adolescents and young adults.

J works with adolescent males who tend to be bright, sometimes quirky, many with issues relating to anxiety, depression, learning differences, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Many have struggled for some time and have difficulties with a basic understanding of their own emotional process. He will say the most important work is done in the field on a one-step-at-time basis by very experienced field instructors who really understand his clients. In addition, the ability to understand what is going on under the surface is crucial in working successfully with each individual.

One exciting addition to Dr. Huffine’s group in the past few years has been utilizing the outdoor opportunities in Central Oregon for periodic adventures including rafting, rock climbing, fly fishing, caving, etc. We are so grateful to have Dr. Huffine on the Evoke team, and he is looking forward to the next 20 years of continuing his work in the wilderness!
