Asperger's Syndrome, Computer & Internet Addictions, Bullying & Social Problems

Asperger’s Syndrome and NLD (Non-Verbal Learning Disability)

On the Autism Spectrum, these disorders are typically discovered in childhood or adolescence. The principle feature is impaired social interactions. He or she frequently misses non-verbal cues including eye contact, facial expressions and gestures. This person may not understand the norms of social relationships or conversation, struggling to develop friendships or healthy social interactions. The person may also develop an intense interest in activities that involve amassing information with very little social interaction. A lack of empathy may arise out of these limitations, but with training and therapy, we find that individuals can learn to read cue’s and connect socially. In addition, family therapy provides parents and siblings a new lens through which to view behaviors that in the past seemed baffling. Small group settings in the wilderness are an ideal match to teach and reinforce improved social functioning. Our Asperger’s specific group also participates in adventure activities in order to increase engagement, reinforce social skills trainings, provide activities that require social cooperation, and build a sense of accomplishment.
