Some have defined trauma as “anything less than ideal.” And while many seek to define trauma as something more discreet, most mental health and addiction issues have trauma as a root cause. The goal at Evoke Therapy Programs is to assist the client to discover the wounds that lead to self-medicating and distracting symptoms. Trauma affects the brain by hardwiring it to respond to life’s challenges in maladaptive and ineffective ways. Experiential wilderness therapy is ideal because it accesses those and treats the trauma through non-verbal, sensory-based interventions. The individual is then able to verbalize the trauma and rewire the brain to a more effective way of coping. Meditation and mindfulness practices offered at Evoke also provide the client with tools to continually address triggers and anxiety.
