Common Questions About Evoke’s Wilderness Therapy Program

Posted by Stephanie Lewis, Admissions & Outreach on October 20, 2016

Stephanie Lewis 63“What is your job?” The question caught me off guard. I had been on the phone with this gentleman for about 40 minutes answering questions and giving details about our program. “I am in admissions and outreach” was my reply. It did get me thinking, though – what is my job. I am the answerer of questions! As an Admissions Representative, I spend the bulk of my time on the phone with prospective families answering their questions. I have been an Evoke employee for six years and as a former field staff and parent coordinator, I feel equipped and comfortable in my role.

Most calls consist of these frequently asked questions:

Where are you located?

We have two locations; Cascades in Bend, OR and Entrada in Santa Clara, UT
(Occasionally I get asked where I am physically located – I work remotely and live in Colorado)

What is the difference between the two locations?

The program itself is essentially the same, the differences are with therapists and/or groups.

How long is your program?

Our average length of stay is 8-10 weeks.

Do I get to choose where my child goes?

Our primary goal is to match each individual with the best fit therapist and group for his/her needs. The online application is key to helping us make that recommendation.

Do they sleep in tents?

Our students and clients make their own shelters out of tarps and cordage. In the beginning, these generally look like an A-frame tent without a bottom. However, they get pretty creative with these and make several different types of shelters.

How much does the program cost?

We have a gear/enrollment fee and a daily rate. Please visit our Wilderness Admissions page for more information.

Does insurance cover it?

Although we do not bill insurance directly, we provide you with itemized coded statements that you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement. We will provide a Claims Specialist to help you with the process.

What will my child need to pack?

Only medical necessities such as medications, dental retainers, glasses, and contacts. We provide all gear, equipment, and clothing.

These are just a few of the more commonly asked questions. I encourage parents to ask anything, even if they think it’s silly. I get that it is a huge decision and my goal is to make sure parents have all the information they need.

Lately, I have noticed more parents asking, “Is there anything I should be asking you that other parents ask?“ or “What else should I know?” As this is a newer line of questioning for me, I’ve been thinking more about it. What I think it boils down to is “Will my child be safe?” The Outdoor Behavior Healthcare Council (OBH) has concluded that participants at an Evoke Wilderness Therapy Program are 10 times safer than the average teen at home.

The physical safety of your child is our priority. Our staff is vigilant about maintaining safety. There is also an environment of “emotional safety” that I don’t think many of our students have experienced in their peer groups before. Staff role model and coach the program tools that promote accountability and vulnerability. This provides students the space to start “feeling” again. Many of them have been doing everything they can to avoid that, whether it be video games, TV, or smoking pot. We offer the opportunity to be without those distractions while supporting them through that transition, which can be a difficult one.

If you are considering Evoke Wilderness Therapy, I encourage you to give us a call. Our Admissions Team is happy to answer any and all of your questions. 866-411-6600.
