Tom

Senior Field Instructor

Tom grew up on Long Island, New York. His time in the wilderness began at a young age camping with his family in New York, Vermont, and parts of Canada. Into adulthood, Tom has cultivated a routine using the restorative nature of the wilderness to respond to life’s challenges, using weekly day hikes or long-term backpacking trips to recharge and reorient himself. His previous experience in the mental health field includes working for a crisis hotline and at a drug rehabilitation program.

In the field, Tom works towards aligning with the students by role modeling what it means to be vulnerable, accountable, and assertive. In addition, he works to connect with students on more personal levels, relating to each another about music, sports, and movies. Tom understands the value of hiking, holding firm boundaries from a place of care, and being humbled by the wilderness. Tom leads by example and brings a part of himself into the field each week.

In his off time, Tom enjoys running, photography, and camping around various parts of the US. Tom graduated with honors from SUNY Geneseo with a degree in psychology and human development. Tom has hopes of becoming a school social worker and being on the forefront of assisting adolescents in crisis.
